The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways (MoPS&W) on September 16, 2026, notified the Merchant Shipping (Medicines, Medical Stores, Appliances, and Medical Officers) Rules, 2026.
The following has been stated: -
•These Rules apply to Indian ships of 200 gross tonnage or more engaged in international voyages or coasting trade.
•Ships must carry prescribed medicines, medical stores, appliances, instruments, dressings, disinfectants, kits, and medical records as per Annexure I.
•Additional quantities are required based on the number of persons onboard, voyage duration, and whether a Medical Officer is required.
•Medicines must be securely stored under the Master’s control and administered as per qualified medical advice where required.
•Ships carrying specified chemical cargoes or residues must additionally maintain medicines prescribed in Annexure II for emergencies involving inhalation, ingestion, eye, or skin contact.
They shall come into force on September 26, 2026.
